When observing the effect of surface area on the rate of a heterogeneous reaction, it is common to observe that the mossy zinc is reacting much faster than the zinc granules (at least at the onset of the initial reaction). This is exactly the opposite what should be observed for this reaction. What would cause the zinc powder to react more slowly than the mossy zinc?

There are 4 other factors that affect the rate of reaction which may be responsible for the slowness of zinc powder namely:

    1. concentration or pressure of a reactant.

    2. temperature.

    3. nature of the reactants.

There are 5 factors that affect reaction rates:

    1. surface area of a solid reactant.

    2. concentration or pressure of a reactant.

    3. temperature.

    4. nature of the reactants.

    5. presence/absence of a catalyst.
