75 cm3 of Chemical A are mixed with 75 cm3 of Chemical B in a coffee cup. A thermometer is used and it is found that the initial temperature of the solution is 22.5 degrees Celsius and at it's peak, the solution reaches a temperature of 48.3 degrees celsius. Determine the amount of heat released in Joules.

    The coffee cup calorimeter formula to determine the heat in a chemical process is:

    q = m*c*ΔT

    Where Q is heat involved in the reaction, m is mass of solution (150g assuming a density of 1 for both chemicals), C is heat capacity of the solution (4.184J/g°C assuming is the same heat capacity of water) and ΔT is change in temperature (48.3°C-22.5°C = 25.8°C)

    Replacing:

    q = 150g*4.184J/g°C*25.8°C

    q = 16192 J

    Thus, heat released is 16192J
