    They will direct excess charge to earth. Static electricity is due to the temporary transfer of electrons from one material to another through rubbing their surfaces together. This can only happen with insulated materials because the charge can't spread throughout the materials, so a visible effect can be observed. With conductors, the electrons will just flow easily throughout the materials, making the effect disappear really quickly.
