A large flask is evacuated and weighed, filled with argon gas, andthen reweighed. WHen reweighed, the flask is found to have gained3.224 g. It is again evacuated and then filled with gas of unknownmolar mass. When reweighed, the flask is found to have gained 8.102g.

a. Based on the molar mass of argon, estimate the molar mass of theunknown gas.

b. What assumption did you make in arriving at your answer?

    a) The answer is 100.39 u

    b) The assumptions are that the two gases are at the same pressure and that both have the same temperature.

    Explanation:

    a) the molecular weight of the argon is 39,948 u, to calculate the mass of the unknown compound we will divide the quantities of the known masses, both that of the argon and the unknown mass and then multiply it by the molecular weight of the argon, as follows:

    unknown gas = (8.102/3.224) * 39.948 u = 100.39 u

    b) The assumptions are that the two gases are at the same pressure and that both have the same temperature.
