Ask Question

A Gouy balance is used to determine the magnetic susceptibility of a substance. A strong electromagnet is placed next to the sample, which is on a balance. If the sample is paramagnetic, the mass reading of the balance will increase when the field is switched on. Based on their electron configurations, predict whether these elements are paramagnetic or diamagnetic.

Unfortunately you haven't presented any elements or molecules but answer is very simple.

    Explanation:

If the molecule or element have unpaired electrons it will be paramagnetic and if all electrons are paired then the compound or element will be diamagnetic. For example Nitrogen gas will be diamagnetic due to it's paired electrons. And oxygen gas will be paramagnetic due to it's two unpaired electrons.
