What happens when the cold finger is placed in the hot water? what direction did the heat travel from the hot water?

Heat travels from hot to cold in order to balance out the temperature. Thus, the heat transfer goes from the hot water to the finger.

If the water was hot enough, it would transfer too much heat, and the finger would get burned.
