sodium bicarbonate (s) + hydrochloric acid (aq) - > sodium chloride (aq) + carbon dioxide (g) + water:

    Because the reaction carried out to completion, forming water, carbon dioxide and a salt, it is likely that the acid was in excess and sodium bicarbonate was limiting.
