A 2.56g sample of anthracene C14H10, was burned to heat an aluminum calorimeter (mass = 948 g). The calorimeter contained 1.50 L of water with an initial temperature of 20.5oC and a final temperature of 34.3oC.

    mass of calorimeter: 948g

    mass of water: 1.50g (assuming 1g/L density)

    Ti = 20.5 C

    Tf = 34.3 C

    Solving for the total heat:

    delta H (water) = 1.50 * 4.184 * (34.3 - 20.5)

    = 86.61 J
