2. A solution of potassium cyanide, KCN, is made by dissolving 3.2 g of KCN in water. When this solution reacts with excess hydrochloric acid, HCl, it produces 0.30 g of poisonous hydrogen cyanide gas, HCN.

KCN + HCl - > KCl + HCN

    A. Theoretical yield of HCN is 1.33g

    B. Percentage yield of HCN is 22.6%

    Explanation:

The balanced equation for the reaction. This is given below:

    KCN + HCl - > KCl + HCN

Determination of the molar mass of of KCN and HCN. This is illustrated below:

    Molar Mass of KCN = 39 + 12 + 14 = 65g/mol

    Molar Mass of HCN = 1 + 12 + 14 = 27g/mol

    A. Determination of theoretical yield of HCN. This is illustrated below:

    From the balanced equation above,

65g of KCN reacted to produce 27g of HCN.

    Therefore, 3.2g of KCN will react to produce = (3.2 x 27) / 65 = 1.33g of HCN.

Therefore, the theoretical yield of HCN is 1.33g

    B. Determination of the percentage yield of HCN. This is illustrated below:

Theoretical yield of HCN = 1.33g

Actual yield of HCN = 0.30

    Percentage yield of HCN =.?

Percentage yield = Actual yield / Theoretical yield x 100

    Percentage yield = 0.30/1.33 x 100

Percentage yield of HCN = 22.6%
