Carbon is able to form a covalent bond when bonding to form long chains. The bonding to form long chains reaction called catenation and carbon element can do this bonding because of its electronic configuration which is 1s2, 2s2, 2P2. This electronic configuration means that carbon element has 4 electrons in its outer shell. Therefore, bonding an octet form would be simple for carbon element.
