Methane and oxygen do not react at room temperature because, at that temperature the activation energy that is needed to be overcome before the reaction can take place can not be overcome. In order for a chemical reaction to occur between the two substances, the temperature has to be raised. This will provide the energy needed to overcome the barriers of the reaction.
