    1327.36 lbs

    Explanation:

    Data provided in the question:

    Magnitude axial load = 1,037 lbs

    Margin of Safety (MS) = 0.28

    Now,

    MS = Factor of safety - 1

    0.28 = Factor of safety - 1

    or

    Factor of safety = 1.28

    also,

    Factor of safety = [ Ultimate load ] : [Applied load]

    1.28 = Ultimate load : 1,037 lbs

    or

    Ultimate load = 1.28 * 1,037 lbs

    = 1327.36 lbs

    For MS = 0

    we get

    0 = Factor of safety - 1

    or

    Factor of safety = 1

    Therefore,

    Factor of safety = [ Ultimate load ] : [Applied load]

    or

    1 = 1327.36 lbs : [Applied load]

    or

    Applied load = 1327.36 lbs
