A summary on the book "The boy who loved Anne Frank" by Ellen Feldman

'The Boy Who Loved Anne Frank', is a take on the Anne Frank Book, now from of the life of Peter van Dann, the Dutch teen who was in hiding with Anne Frank. It's a look at what might have happened if Peter lived, and escaped the death camps of Nazi Germany. From this view, Peter is coming to America in the 1950's and reinventing himself. The "new", Peter van Pels, (not Dann) is a non-Jew. We see him as married to a Jew. Here he is a father who has three children. Also, he has the number on his arm from the death camp. His penis is circumcised. We feel his is torment by flashbacks and from his memories. These surface when The Diary of Anne Frank is published. He can't run away from his feelings. When the book becomes a bestseller, then is turned into a Broadway play Peter is forced to tackle his past. We see the truth of his inner pain and see the boy in the man. Peter learns about himself from Anne's eyes as the boy she came to love hiding together in the attic. His memory are too much for him and starts flipping his new life out of order. Peter looks at what it was and is to "be a Jew" Finally, accepting himself as the 'Peter in Anne's diary'. This sets his life on a path and makes him feel a responsibility to tell his truth for the sake of his father and mother.
