Compassionate yet distant is Mrs. Samsa. She seems to pity her son - at least she says so. But she doesn't want to get near him. In fact, she seems disgusted by his new looks.

Patient and forgiving - Gregor Samsa. Although he is despairing and depressed over his new state of being, he still patiently waits for his family to get accustomed, and tries to get out of their way whenever he can. He forgives everybody for mistreating him. Finally, he even dies to release them of burden.

Emotional but weak is Gregor's sister Grete. At first, she seems to be the only one who maintains a genuine connection with transformed Gregor. It is a hint that she must have loved him. But soon enough, he becomes an annoying obligation and a burden to her.

Unsympathetic and overbearing is Mr. Samsa. He has always had high expectations for Gregor - not high ambitions, but expectations that Gregor will provide for all of them. Now that Gregor is indisposed, to say the least, his father again shows his cruel, authoritative nature.
