    The adverb modifies the verb, but is not an object of the verb.

    The object here, what John said is "a very lively Broadway show". (which contains options a, b and d, and leaves c as the correct answer).

    But i would say that there is not "an adverb" but an adverbial phrase "last year" - both these words are needed to form the phrase
