What does the following metaphor mean? What is it comparing?

"It is one of those invaluable seeds, from which ... one can grow something that represents other people's experiences."

    The excerpt is from Virginia Woolf's "A Sketch of the Past." She describes how passionate she was about fishing, until her father said he did not enjoy it as much. Slowly, her interest diminished. However, she refers to the early experience of passion in sport as the seed that allows her to understand others who remain passionate about their activities.

    The metaphor compares a thought or an experience with a seed, because it can implant itself in the brain, (just like a seed in the soil) and from it, new experiences and thoughts can arise (in the way that plants are born out of the seeds).
