It is more likely to read about a young girl doing household chores in a story set in the 1900s because of the fact that the society in those times was very different from today's society and it was considered normal for a girl not to go to school. It is a fact that back then girls didn't have so many oportunities for education nor did they have any career choices like today. So, their only option was to get married which resulted in them being restricted in the house doing household chores and raising children. Their parents also kept them at home, they didn't send them to school, and from a young age they learned how to do the household chores in the house. On the other hand, in a story set in modern times a girl of the same age would more likely do a lot of different things and not just household chores, if she does any at all. This is because today's reality is different and in the Western world 13-year-old girls have to go to school and consequently have many more oportunities than a girl living in the 1900s.

So, the main reason for this difference could be the fact that girls in the 1900s were deprived of education.
