One thing I would do would be to work hard to make the subject as interesting and exciting as possible for example I had a geology prof whose lectures were like a travelogue showing different geological features in different parts of the states and also interesting details like where the sand comes from for what used to be used for burning cigarette extinction (for ash trays). Another prof recently removed our fear of exams by taking us step by step through a typical exam and showing us how to answer the questions.
