    It could be said that the main purpose of the essay would be to call people's attention to poverty in Ireland. it seems that his idea was to shock the reader so they would pay attention; he mentioned extreme poverty, overpopulation and unfair trade with Great Britain. Thought its satirical tone, he was able to cause an impact on the reader.
