Does this sentence sound right or should I change it to "I let out a sigh"

"I merely let out a piteous sigh."

    I'd take out the merely ... unless your trying to meet a word requirement, merely is the word that isn't needed at all in the sentence ... otherwise it's amazing.

    Use the "I let out a sigh-" one, they both make sense but the first one is more comprehensible to other readers and its simple.
