    If an actor is directed to go "stage left," he would move to his left and not to the audience’s left.

    Explanation;

    Onstage is the part of the stage enclosed by the setting which is visible to the audience in any particular scene.

    Stage left is the actor's left as he stands onstage facing the audience, while,

    Stage right is the actor's right as he stands onstage facing the audience.

    Downstage is towards the audience and upstage is away from the audience.
