Britain combined both direct and indirect rule to rule over India. Direct rule referred to direct administration of all the Indian territories and places within the Queen's dominions were governed by Her Majesty through the use Governor-General of India.

Indirect rule referred to those areas of India which were under the administration of Indian kings rather than the British crown directly but all the defense and foreign policies of the native states were entirely controlled by the British during the colonial period
