Liu Bang was Emperor of China from 202 BC to 195 BC. He was the first emperor of the Han Dynasty. Together with Xiang Yu, they both overthrew the Qin dynasty in 207 BC. After a long battle between Liu Bang and Xiu Bang, Liu Bang defeated Xiang Yu in 202 BC at the battle of Gaixia and then proclaimed himself the first emperor of the Han dynasty. He is one of the few dynasty founders in China's history who have come from the peasant class.

After Liu Bang became emperor, China was based on the Qin model. He gradually replaced the original vassals, granting land to his relatives. Since the economy had been devastated by war after the Qin dynasty ceased, he cut taxes and developed agriculture, restricting spending. However, in response to the decline of Qin traders, it restricted trade with heavy taxes and legal limitations. He also made peace with Xiongnu. Under the rule of Liu Bang, Confucian thought gradually replaced the thought of legalism; Confucian scholars were welcome in his government, and the harsh laws of legalism were abated.

Liu Bang also annexed most kingdoms and established principalities, with their children and relatives as princes. Thus he consolidated his newborn empire.
