The disposal and treatment of waste can produce emissions of several greenhouse gasses (GHGs), which contribute to global climate change. The most significant GHG gas produced from waste is methane. It is released during the breakdown of organic matter in landfills.

In landfills, a lot of times the garbage will biodegrade releasing methane gases into the atmosphere which can affect the climate by "Global Warming" or what is now known as Climate Change.
