    Vertical plumes of very hot magma in the mantle are thought to have brought material straight up to the surface of the Earth to form the plates. This is similar to the modern process that makes Hawaii's active volcanic region; the volcanoes form from a plume of hot magma rising straight up from the Earth's depths
