There actually are simple ... Black Beauty's sire was a Thoroughbred and his dam was a mare that likely was a heavy-boned part-Thoroughbred ... That Beauty had a temperament suitable as a lady's mount meant that he wasn't as "hot" as a Thoroughbred would be.
