Great Britain's history as a naval power meant it could enforce the maintenance of its colonies like in the 13 colonies and in Canada thus ensure that the British colonizers would propagate a British-type culture by the colonizers who were born in Britain still had values and customs from Britain. Innovation in Britain spurred the Industrial Revolution by such inventions as the steam engine by James Watt and its use for example in coal mines to power pumps to de-water the mines and allow mining at greater depths. Also, they invented the Bessemer process for steel making and the Spinning Jenny to spur the textile industry.
