-Cuba is the Caribbean's largest island and largest country. It is located between the Caribbean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean. North of Cuba are the United States and the Bahamas, to the west is Mexico, and to the south are the Cayman Islands, Jamaica and Haiti. The country has a total area of 110 860 km². The capital is Havana, which with about 2.4 million inhabitants is the largest city in the Caribbean.

Cuba has been a socialist republic since the Cuban Revolution in 1959. The World Bank defines Cuba as a middle-income country with a gross national income per capita of $5890, placing the country in 11th place in Latin America. Cuba, on the other hand, ranks as Latin America's second most developed country (after Chile) on the United Nations Human Development Index, and ranked 44th in the world. The reason for this much higher ranking is that Cuba scores very high on health and education.

-The United States of America is the world's fourth largest country, after Russia, Canada and China. It has about 320 million inhabitants, which also makes the country the world's third most populous, only bypassed by China and India.

Since the end of the Cold War in 1989, the United States has been the world's leading economic and military force. The country houses many of the world's most renowned universities and research institutions, and is a world leader in high technology.
