The Mali empire reached its peak in 1300 when it stretched to the west coast of Africa. During this time, there were high developments in math, astronomy, and literature. The kingdom also had numerous gold reserves, which were the main resource when engaging in trade with other regions.

If Mali would have had Iron instead of gold, its trade with the Kush Kingdom of Meroe would have been considerably limited. As Iron would have been a plentiful resource and would have had a decrease in its value.

It is estimated that the gold reserves of the mining companies operating in Mali could reach 600 tons in 2015. The reserves of the mining companies present in Mali are equivalent to 12 years of gold mining production at the current rate of 50 tons per year according to data from the Ministry of Mines of Mali.

Mali is the third largest gold mining country in Africa behind South Africa and Ghana. Precious metal revenues are the main source of foreign currency for Mali.

For the aforementioned, Mali, currently faces humanitarian problems, which have to do with the exploitation of people in mining activity, environmental pollution and corruption that does not allow the advancement of society. In the event that this country changes its gold reserves for iron, it would have the same problems, since iron is very required in heavy industry in the international market, therefore, it would continue to suffer from the current problems.
