On June 23rd, 1956 Gamal Abdel Nasser was legitimized as second President of Egypt and a new constitution was approved for the country. At the Bandung Conference held in 1955 he emerged as a world figure. In 1956, Great Britain and the United States withdrew their financial aid to the project of the Aswan Dam. Nasser nationalized the Suez Canal. The decision precipitated the invasion of Egypt by France and Great Britain, allied with Israel. However, the invaders, under pressure from the United States and the Soviet Union, withdrew. In 1967 Nasser resigned, after the Six Day War against Israel, but was forced to return to power in the face of popular acclaim, intervening as mediator in several Arab conflicts. On September 28, 1970, he died in Cairo of a heart attack.
