The Americans wanted to expand to the Pacific Ocean because they wanted to gain control over more territory rich in natural resources, to become the largest and dominant country in the New World, as well as further improve their strategical position.

With the increase of the territory, the Americans got their hands on numerous natural resources, and that led to growth in the economy. They also became the second largest country in the New World, but considering that Canada was no match for them, they became by far the dominant force. With the Pacific coastline being in their hands, the Americans were now able to have access to two oceans, thus being able to use them for trade and travel on which ever side of the world they wanted.

All of this resulted in greater unity among the people, as they were seeing that the country is s growing power that strides constantly forward, thus they started to develop national pride and identity in America.
