    The first Dutch ship with slaves arrived in Jamestown in 1619. In the Chesapeake colonies Delaware, Maryland and Virginia, slaves were the predominant workforce. Most tobacco cultivated, harvested and processed in those colonies in the 16th century was the work of slaves.
