Abraham Lincoln stated in 1858, "I am not nor ever have been in favor of bringing about in anyway the social and political equality of the white and black races."

Explain why Lincoln issued his Emancipation Proclamation in 1862.

    The reason why Lincoln issued his Emancipation Proclamation in 1862 is because although his number one priority had been the preservation of the Union, it was clear this wasn't going to happen as the Civil War became worse. So he issued this proclamation to "force the hand" of the South by taking away their legal right to own slaves.
