Enslaved people in the 1700's included not only blacks, but the Irish, especially women. In the north, slaves sometimes worked as indentured servants where they would work for approximately seven years then be granted their freedom. They worked as assistants for shopkeepers and the women worked as housekeepers. In the south, mainly blacks worked on plantations picking cotton and other crops and some worked as nursemaids in the plantation's main home.
