The outcry over President Garfield's assassination paved the way for Civil Service reform. So the correct option in regards to the given question is option "C". The assassination of James A. Garfield was totally politically motivated and the incident happened in the year 1881. President Garfield was assassinated by Charles Guiteau. Charles was of the opinion that he would be given a government job in regards to the campaigning he had done for President Garfield. When the President ignored him and did not hand him a government job, he became angry and in that rage shor the President twice and ultimately the president succumbed to that injury as the second bullet could not be taken out of the Presidents body.
