How were militias raised in colonial America?

    Militias back then were mainly average people and later became more organized with each other or under an actual military commander or general. Sometimes, the local law required men and even young boys to have and be able to use muskets efficiently, meaning it would be easy to make a militia out of nowhere when need-be.
