Nat Turner, the leader of the largest slave uprising in the history of the southern states, which broke out in Southampton County, Virginia 1831. As a slave had no last name and was registered only as Nathaniel. However, according to accepted practice in the South they called him by using the name of the owner, in this case, Samuel Turner. The systematic murder of white civilians during the uprising makes his activity highly controversial. The fear of a repeat of the revolt of Nat Turner led to the introduction of repressive acts against blacks in the South. Freedom of blacks in Virginia has been drastically reduced
