They declared war on Japan after Pearl Harbor and because Japan was an axis power and they had supplied the allies. Eventually the other axis powers (Germany and Italy) declared war on the U. S. then they fought for the allies

The U. S. reaction to World War II was, President Roosevelt signed the Declaration of War against Germany on December 11, 1941.
