Stalin wanted a second front opened in order to divide the German army on two fronts. When he asked for the second front the only threat to Germany came from the Soviet Union and the full brunt of the attack fell upon the USSR. More than 4.5 million German soldiers were fighting on the Eastern front and the Soviets were losing ground fast. At the time that the second front in France was opened the Germans were already in a retreat.
