The correct answer is C. they tended to be Catholic and Jewish.

A is incorrect because even before, most immigrants were Protestants from England. B is incorrect because most immigrants came from England so they obviously spoke English. D is incorrect because this wasn't a trait of the new immigrants only, but rather of the old ones too. However, what was different about them was their religion, which tended to be Catholicism and Judaism.
