Hurston performed for the tourists in her hometown because she "enjoyed doing it".

Hurston was born in Notasulga, Alabama, and in the year 1894 migrated to Eatonville, Florida, alongwith her family. Eatonville would turn into the setting for a large number of her accounts. Hurston's works addressed the African-American experience and her battles as an African-American lady. Her books went unrecognized by the literary world for a considerable length of time, however this changed after writer Alice Walker distributed "In Search of Zora Neale Hurston" in the Ms. Magazine.
