Benjamin Martin fought in the Seven Years' War. His war experience makes him know the consequences of war. For this reason, in the Assembly where the freedom of the colonies of British rule is discussed, he strongly opposes to it, since he knows that war brings with it sadness, death and destruction for the people. He tries to prevent his son Gabriel from joining the army, but he cannot change his position and he is forced to join the battle against the red coats.
