John Dix Fisher first proposed the idea of a school for blind children. He considered the idea after visiting the National Institute for the Blind in Paris and used his inspiration to create a similar school in Boston. The first residential school, founded in 1829, is called Perkins School for the Blind but it was originally named New England Asylum for the Blind.
