Sunni Muslims make up the majority of modern Muslims. What do they believe about how leadership is handed down? God chooses each new Muslim leader. The Muslim people should elect new leaders. Descendants of Muhammad become Muslim leaders. New leaders are determined through war and conflict.

    Sunni Muslims make up the majority of modern Muslims and believe in a different transmission of succession from the Prophet Muhammad in comparison to Shi'a Muslims. Sunni Muslims believe that the next Caliph or leader of the Muslim community should be chosen by the people and therefore, the Muslim people should choose or elect their new leaders.
