    It all started in the Jamestown colony in Virginia. The Headright System was a portion of land that was granted to a colonist. The average portion of land granted was 50 acres. So colonies such as the Carolinas, Georgia, and many others used the system to attract more people interested in working in the plantations to grow crops. A big number of people arrived at the colonies as indentured servants, people who committed to work in the plantation for many years in exchange for food, shelter, and some times, a portion of the crop.
