What problems does America experience in having a free press to cover its own government?

It is possible for journalists to spread misinformation. The press may also influence the opinions of the public on elected officials and this greatly effects the government. However, the press still has standards to abide by and may be guilty of libel or slander. There are also limits on what can be said such as things that may cause "imminent lawless action".
