The Peace allowed the state princes to select either Lutheranism or Catholicism as the religion of their domain and permitted the free emigration of residents who dissented. The legislation officially ended conflict between the two groups, though it made no provisions for other Protestant denominations, such as Calvinism.

    C. Martin Luther and the Roman Catholic Church.

The Peace of Augsburg (1555) was an agreement which put an end to the conflict between Roman Catholics and Lutherans in Germany. It gave recognition to the Augsburg Confession (the primary confession of faith of the Lutheran Church) and the Catholic faith.

It set the equal right for both parties to decide which religion should prevail in their lands, allowed dissenters to emigrate to wherever they wished and required the free cities to allow both Catholics and Lutherans to practice their religions.
