the population of the United States is too large

    Explanation:

The direct democracy means that everyone in the society will be included in the decision making about the country. While this can function in small countries with small populations, it is almost impossible in a large country with large population. The United States are one of the largest countries in the world, and on top of it, it has over 300 million citizens. Having over 300 million people included in direct decision making about the country would be nothing but chaos. The chances that there will be agreement about something are very low, as there will countless different opinions and positions on the issues. A simple decision can take forever, and with high chances that it may never be voted, so a system like this is out of the question.
