A War Hawk is a supporter of escalation in the political debate on military issues, a member of the "pro-war party". The term was coined by John Randolph during the War of 1812 between the USA and England.

The first "hawks" were some members of the 12th Congress, led by speaker Henry Clay, the leader of the Democratic-Republican Party in Congress, and the members of that faction who led all the major committees, which gave him effective control over parliamentary work.

In 1812, as relations between the United States and the British Empire faltered, the War Hawks wanted to get territories from Canada and pressured President James Madison, who eventually had to give in, which led to the War of 1812.
