    The position that the Europeans took in calling Africa an uncivilized society was based upon racist notions of white superiority and ethnocentric beliefs of the civility and superiority of European society. In reality the differing lifestyles and levels of economic development found in Africa did not necessarily correlate with any distinct or reasonable notions of "civility" or being uncivilized.
